The British government attempted to extend conscription to Ireland in April 1918. It had already been enacted in Britain January of 1916. However in Ireland it set off mass resistance.
The Conscription crisis confirmed the separatists of Sinn Fein as the leaders of nationalist Ireland, helped to sink the Irish Parliamentary Party and was in many ways the end of British rule in Ireland.
