John Dorney, author of The Story Of The Easter Rising, 1916, conducted an interview with Fearghal McGarry whose book, The Rising, Easter 1916 he reviewed here.

McGarry highlights the radical relevance well, and the downplayed ideological motivations of many grassroots rebels. Intriguing juxtapositions. Intelligent questions here and concise responses. Timely interview, and thanks for this. (I also posted a review on my blog 3 May and to New York Journal of Books 26 April; it complements John Dorney’s take on the study well!)

  That’s an interesting point about the contradiction there between radical leaders and non-ideological followers. I suppose part of the Republican’s sense of disillusion when the revolution was over (after the civil war) was the realisation that the masses who they’d managed to mobilise to a certain extent against the British were really not that radical after all and were content with the conservative Free State. Was this down to the early deaths of the Rising’s leaders or would it have happened anyway? I think it’s an open question.
